Rioja remains own of the world’s most popular wine regions, even though it’s hard to define what a typical Rioja might be. The regions has two distinct micro climates or growing seasons; one is hot and continental and the other fresh and Atlantic. The region has both modernist wine makers and some of the most traditional producers in the world making contrasting styles. Furthermore, some producers prefer Tempranillo to take centre stage, whilst others feel the Mediterranean variety Garnacha best suits them. Some like new oak, and some long very long ageing in large neutral old barrels.
Here we’ll shed some light on this fascinating region with a tasting of various styles and philosophies, culminating in a glass of the highly sought after Gran Reserva from the arch traditionalist, Lopez de Heredia.
