Formed in 1985 in Ealing, London, The Brand New Heavies emerged as a formidable force in the music scene, blending the rhythms of 1970s funk with contemporary jazz influences. Their self-titled debut album in 1990 set the stage for a series of hits that would define a genre. The addition of American vocalist N'Dea Davenport in 1990 propelled the band to new heights, with tracks like "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way" becoming staples of the acid jazz movement.
Their 1994 album Brother Sister not only achieved platinum status but also solidified their place in music history with singles such as "Dream On Dreamer" and "Midnight at the Oasis". The band's versatility was further showcased in their 1992 release Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1, which featured collaborations with prominent hip-hop artists, bridging genres and expanding their audience.
In recent years, The Brand New Heavies have continued to evolve, with Angela Ricci taking on lead vocals since 2018. Their 2025 performance at the Royal Albert Hall, accompanied by the London Concert Orchestra, was a testament to their enduring appeal and musical prowess. The setlist featured a mix of their classic hits, reaffirming their status as icons of the genre.
